What should I do when doing an interview?
- Set up with your computer in a quiet place with a clean, professional background.
- At the end of the interview pre-empt what’s going to happen next.
- Send your recommendation on Slack and do a bottom line call before your 1st lap. If successful arrange a time for their final round interview for the afternoon.
- After the final round interview if successful the management team will let you know and give the candidate a call to say congratulations and rehash what’s going to happen next.
What if…
They don’t answer the phone for the bottom line call?
Follow up! The rule of thumb is to always call twice in a row. Then send them an email to let them know you’ve called and for them to get in contact to rearrange a time to speak. Explain we are looking to wrap up the interview process and only have so many final round interview slots available so please get back in contact ASAP.
Use your impulse factors.
Top Tips:
- First impressions count: Have a clean & tidy background, make sure there is good lighting, and you’re in a quiet place. Use a computer, it looks more professional for the candidate, you can tell when someone is using a phone.
- Follow up: The difference between someone trying to build a team and the person with the biggest team in the office is that they will always follow up.
- Online presence: The average candidate will search the company, the members of the team and you! LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Google etc. What will they find?
- Breakdown your observations: Like how we do when we start in the field, we breakdown our day to identify x3 things we did well, x3 challenges, x3 ways to overcome. Do this with observations, you will find yourself improving twice as fast.
- Role play: When you get asked questions you’ve not heard before, or don’t know how to answer, write them down and role play them as soon as you can with your Leader/Director. The next time you’re asked that question you’ll know what to say.
